TRAVESIA RECICLADA

Tribute to Federico Garcia Lorca. Clown Transvestite theatrical piece

language: Spanish with English subtitles

This Journey will be a journey, a yire* through the theatrical timeline.
In a tribute to the beloved Federico García Lorca, our clowns
transvestites Lupe and Frenesí, collect some theatrical pieces from humor
and drama to denounce historical violence against the bodies that
are outside the hetero-cis-norm and that they are not so far from those that
we live today.
The Carmelites click their heels, run, sigh poems, dance and sing
going through the manifesto of their existence at every moment.

Carmelitas Clown

A duo of transvestite clowns created in 2013 by Gemma Ríos and Carmín Lupe.

From their subjectivity as counter-hegemonic femininities, Carmelitas Clown occupies the stages knowing that sexually-gendered dissidences have historically been silenced and banished from performance spaces – especially in the humor scene, where men have always played a leading role. They began their journey in the underground cabarets of Buenos Aires, where they gained the audience's affection through uncomfortable truths. This experience also translated into theater plays where they crystallized their thoughts, heritage, desires, and struggles.

Their mastery of technique and language in the art of clowning instantly brought them together, starting a dialectic of actresses, clowns, of who they were in their everyday lives. An associative, alternative, self-managed, dissident, neighborhood dialectic between the calm Altiplano clown Lupe (Carmín Lupe) and the irreverent euphoria of the clown Frenesí (Gemma Ríos); tenderly laughing at misogynistic audiences at a time when it was still uncommon to see transvestite clowns on stage, provoking the transphobic and cissexist culture.

In mid-2014, in the dressing room of the Centro Cultural Tierra Violeta, the traviarca singer and artist Susy Shock encouraged them by saying: “You are transvestite clowns.”

This act of sponsorship helped them to stand their ground on stage, enjoying the choice of heels, makeup, plastic flowers in their headdresses, and their dresses matched to the dissonance of their bodies. Carmelitas Clown is recognized as a fundamental reference for the theater scene, human rights, and sexually-gendered dissidence in Buenos Aires and Argentina.

Together they have toured important festivals and performance spaces in Argentina such as: El Maquinal 2023, Quetren Quetren 2023, Centro Cultural Haroldo Conti 2022, Ciclo de la Diversidad Cultural de Mercedes 2022, Festival de Trabajadoras de la Cultura en La Herrería Teatro 2022, Casa Brandon 2022, Escuela de Circo Aluperán 2022, Enjambre de Mostres 2021, Festival Diverso Disidente Bolsón 2018 and 2019, Festival Jauría Mutante 2018, 1° FENAT – Festival Nacional de Arte Transformista 2017, Encuentros Nacionales de Colectivos de Varones and Encuentros Latinoamericanos de Varones Antipatriarcales 2014 and 2018.
