To Be - Nora Amin
With and By Nora Amin
On the occasion of the international women’s day, coinciding with the 8th of March every year, we invite you on Thursday 12 March to not only celebrate women’s rights and accomplishments, but primarily to examine what has been achieved so far, and to question what it means to be a woman from a queer and intersectional perspective. With a solo interactive performance by choreographer and performer Nora Amin, we dive into how capitalism, coloniality and patriarchy impact the definition of womanhood, often restricting the identity, sexuality and behaviour of the person, rather than really facilitating the liberty and the choice. With her cultural roots being in Egypt, Nora reflects on how social class and economy influence the human worth of women and girls, how family can be the first place for fear and muting, how sexual violations are daily reality, how femicide still persists while law and civil society remain silenced in the face of multiple visible and invisible powers, and how sexuality remains a taboo.
After a long collaborative connection between amnesty international Deutschland e.V. and Nora Amin, this performance is the first one to be addressed to young girls -above 14 years old- and to adults at the same time. This is an interactive experience where the audience is invited to participate with words or gestures in a structured way. It is a moment when we should not only speak out and reflect, but also listen, dream and act together for a better future. This is a solo performance including dance, spoken monologues and music.
