Boca a Boca

Ricardo Bittencourt / João Sanches /

Language: Brazilian Portugues

"Boca a Boca : a solo for Gregório" attempts to acknowledge the importance of the Bahian poet Gregório de Matos, considered by many theoreticians to be the first Brazilian writer to be actually born in Brazil in 1636. After he became known as "Boca do Inferno" (Port for Hell's Mouth) and "Boca de Brasa" (Glowing Mouth) for his harsh and mocking criticism of 17th century society, Gregório was arrested and sent into exile in Angola. He succeeded in being forgiven and returned to Brazil, but on condition that he lived in Recife and never returned to Bahia, as he remained banned from his country to this day. "We want to bring Gregório back to Bahia and show how up-to-date he is," comments director Sanches. And he points out: "We want to give Gregório a solo*. (*Solo in Portuguese stands for both floor and monologue)
